Flex 3, and Air 1.0 is now released, after being in beta for quite a long time. So this month FUGN (Flash User Group Norway) meeting, of course had to make a special event for this Flex/Air launch
I gave a small presentation of Flex 3 and whats new in this release (compared to Flex 2). The Flex 3 release is divided into four major themes:
- Better workflow and intergration between designer and developer
- Integration with Creative Suite 3 by a new template based model for skinning flex components, while the assets can be imported into a flex project and applied as skins for components
- New Flex Component Kit for Flash CS3 that provides a complete workflow for authoring content in Flash that can be seamlessly integrated into a Flex application
- Native support for Adobe AIR
- Adobe AIR development tools is a part of the the Flex SDK and Flex Builder, and enables developers to create desktop applications
- Platform evolution and productivity enhancements
- Persistent framework caching
- Flex is open source
- Support for refactoring and memory and performance profiles
- Enhanced support for accessibility and localization
- Enhanced browser intergration - Javascript/Ajax wrappers
- Deeplinking is included in the framework
- New Visual CSS editor and better support for styling of components
- New tools to work with data and enhanced data visualization components
- Advanced datagrid with hierarchical data view, grouping, sorting and custom formatting of cell/row/columns
- New chart components
- Webservice introspection tool - lookup and connect to a webservice
- Data wizards - tools to connect to remote data sources, generating proxy classes
